Total population living with HIV/AIDS in the world: 40 million
Adults: 37 million
Children under the age of 15: 2.5 million
People newly infected with HIV in 2003: 5 million
Adults: 4.2 million
Children under the age of 15: 700,000
AIDS related deaths in 2003: 3 million
Adults: 2.5 million
Children under the age of 15: 500,000
- Every day around the world there are 14,000 new HIV infections, 95% of them are in developing countries.
- Every hour of every day, 354 people die if AIDS - about one every 10 seconds. That's like a 747 crashing every hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- By 2010, it is expected that 45 million people will have lost their lives to the disease. (unicef.ca)
- 4.1 million people in sub-Saharan Africa need access to the antiretroviral drugs that slow the effects of AIDS. Currently, only 50,000 have this access.
